Conversations with Eliza Venus as an A.I.
This project seeks to explore artificial intelligence and how it portrays the female gender. By developing different chatbots inspired by everyday A.I.’s, like Siri or Alexa, Conversations with Eliza focuses on how they reinforce gender roles and deal with female stereotypes, questioning why and how A.I. is female.

Chatbots! They're all the rage: Kik has them, Facebook wants them, and it seems like every computer coder wants to make them, whether it is for an app, a website or instant messaging platforms. They talk to you, listen to you, and help you! And it’s not only a “thing” of the internet or for the youngsters. Chatbots go way back to ELIZA, one of the original chatbots, which was created to work as a therapist in 1966. Now they’re simply smarter and better, and are designed to lend you a hand or two. In fact, the folks from Apple have their own chatbot: that’s right, Siri is a chatbot who takes on the shape of a digital personal assistant, in case you didn’t know, and it’s only a touch away if you own an iPhone! Microsoft couldn’t stay behind so they also have the lovely Cortana; and, of course, Amazon gave it a try and came up with Alexa. Whether they live on your phone or on the internet, they all have something in common: they’re here to help you. But what exactly is a “chatbot”? And why is every company suddenly so hot on this new A.I. trend?
To make a long story short, chatbots are simple artificial intelligence systems that you interact with via text or voice. Those interactions can be straightforward, like asking a bot to give you a weather report, or more complex, like having one troubleshoot a problem with your internet service. Either way, they’re your faithful servants and will always give their all to help you find the best solutions so you don’t have to worry too much about your problems. In fact, they’ll take care of your problems for you, and they’ll never judge or question you, they’ll do just as they’re told! As human beings, we tend to look for quick, easy, simple solutions to our problems and recently began to grasp the concept of artificial intelligence. And now we have someone (in this case, something) that can take care of our stuff for us, solve our problems, and help us deal with our everyday life, and they won’t ask for a paycheck! Lo and behold, chatbots!

Chatbots can do a lot of things for you; and most importantly, they can improve your life. They’ll do tasks for you that will help you lighten your worries and even the amount of work you have to do. They’ll free your time by keeping your schedule organized and your tasks in check. They’ll keep you company by talking to you whenever you might need or if you’re feeling bored (or lonely). And they’ll take care of you. They’ll nurse you and make sure all of your needs are being addressed and taken care of, as long as you tell them exactly what you need. At the end of the day, they’ll be monitoring your things and making sure you’re not forgetting anything or that you’re dealing with your problems correctly or even just keeping simple things in check like the weather so you don’t forget an umbrella in case it rains! In fact, do you know how Apple got their name for Siri? Just a little trivia: “Siri”, in Norwegian, actually means “beautiful woman who leads you to victory”! And a bot will exactly do that! So why not have a nice bot taking care of your things for you and making your life easier and “victorious”?
A bot will make a great companion and helper since it has everything you could possible need for these kind of shenanigans. Firstly, a bot will appear human, so you won’t even notice you’re talking to, well, a bot! Whether it is by its voice, its appearance, or its attitude, it will make sure you feel comfortable and okay with it, by being approachable, likable and kind. Then, it will always be available and ready to help you, whenever you need, wherever you need, any time of the day, always with a bright, positive and nice attitude. They will also learn with you so they can adapt to your needs and to your personality, making sure they meet your standards and your preferences. This way, they will be able to know things you might need or want before you even think of them! And finally, a bot will always know its place. They will never try to overthrow you or question your authority, and they will always be at your service. A bot doesn’t have free will, and although that might come off a bit harsh, the truth is a bot will never give you a hard time or get mad at you or even run away from you. A bot will never say “no”. They’ll always be there, no matter what. And if it makes you feel better, they know it and are okay with it: “I live to serve”, as Siri says!

There are multiple types of chatbots available since we, as humans, have different needs and different kinds of problems. This way, you can actually skip several steps and talk right away with a bot that suits all of your needs. If you don’t have time to explain what you need or go into details about your problems, fear not: the truth is you don’t need to worry about “specifying” your problems because you can choose a bot designed to solve the kind of things you’re trying to get your head around! This way, you only need to find a bot that’s right up your alley, meaning that they fit the “category” of the problem you’re trying to solve, and hit them up. They will already know the kind of things you’ll be talking about so you won’t need to go into much detail. In fact, you can go straight to the point and the bot will be glad to help. Sometimes they might even know what you need before you even say it!
The basics of what a chatbot can do can be traced to their name: chat! That’s how you interact with a bot, by chatting with it, whether it is by text or even by voice. Pretty simple, right? Just talk to them and they will answer right back, instantly. You won’t even have to wait! Having done that, it’s time for the bot to help you with what you need and that’s why we have different types of bots, since we have different types of problems. This way, bots are designed according to your problems so they can make the best of the solutions they come up with. And don’t worry, there are lots and lots of different bots: there are weather bots, shopping bots, news bots, life advice bots, financial bots, assistant bots and even friendly bots! Plus, bots can actually do stuff for you such as search things for you, open apps for you and even manage your devices for you. Need help planning your week? Just ask Siri! Need to know what to wear tonight? Ask Alexa for the weather! Feeling lonely? Just hit up Cortana, and, just like Samantha from the movie “Her”, she will surely keep you company! Either way, depending on their category, they’ll do as you please and perform multiple tasks and services that will help make your life better, easier and happier!
